How to Design a Custom Engagement Ring
How to Design a Custom Engagement Ring
The engagement ring you give (or receive) is more than a pretty piece of jewellery, it’s a symbol of your love story. While ready‑made rings are beautiful, a custom engagement ring from Tompkins Jewellers in Lethbridge, Alberta allows you to curate a unique design that captures your partner’s personality and the unique moments you’ve shared together. Designing a ring from scratch may sound daunting, but with a clear plan and the right jeweller the process can be exciting and deeply personal.
1. Gather Inspiration and Start a Conversation
Every custom ring journey begins with an idea. And what better way to get that idea across than with sharing a picture, a Pinterest board, a sketch or even a collection of design elements you like with your chosen designer, of which we have four. During this consultation you and your designer will:
- Discuss preferences: Talk about diamond or gemstone sizes, qualities and shapes, band style and thickness, metal type (karat and color) along with setting style.
- Share your story: Telling your designer about important moments or personal symbols helps them personalize the ring, making it unique to you and your partner.
- Talk about budget and timeline: Honest conversations about what you’re comfortable spending and your ring timeline help guide the design.
2. Collaborate on the Design
Once your vision is clear the design process begins! We combine old‑world artistry alongside new world technology to translate your ideas into detailed images. We offer a choice of CAD (computer aided design) renderings, or hand sketches offering a single view.
This collaborative phase allows you to:
- Review CAD renderings that show the ring from 3 to 5 angles.
- Or collaborate on a hand‑drawn sketch for a more artistic feel.
- Hand pick your diamonds and gemstones if you wish, for a more curated result. We specialize in unique colored gemstones and stunning diamonds of all shapes, colors and sizes.
Seeing your personalized ring take shape on screen means you can tweak proportions, swap setting styles, or adjust details without any commitment. Don’t be afraid to request changes as this step is about refining the design until it matches your dream.
Once the details have been agreed upon, we move to the next step of printing a 3D resin computer design or hand carving a 3D wax design.
· With a 3D printed wax model or hand carved wax model you can see and hold an exact prototype of your ring to check proportions before production.
· This step gives scale and solidifies ideas of height, width, comfort and fit. Once those details are solidified we can then create an accurate quote and timeline for completion.
3. Crafting and Final Touches
After approving the quote we begin crafting your ring.
This final stage combines CAD work and design with master craftsmanship, from stone selection to precision finishing and includes casting the chosen metal, setting each stone, adding engraving or filigree work and polishing the piece to perfection. Throughout the process we will keep you updated, ensuring you are part of every step.
When you choose to have a piece custom made, this form of craftsmanship means better quality which results in a ring made with real care and thoughtfulness from start to finish. The final reveal, when you see and hold your completed ring is often a dream come true!
4. Practical Considerations
- Timeline: Most custom CAD engagement rings take 4 to 6 weeks from consultation to completion, depending on complexity. Plan early, especially if you have a specific proposal date. Most hand fabricated designs can me made between 2 to 4 weeks and will be cast or hand fabricated in-house.
- Budget: Custom doesn’t necessarily mean expensive. We can help maximize value and work within your budget.
- Stone Selection: Decide whether you prefer a natural diamond or a lab‑grown stone. Lab‑grown diamonds and gemstones are often much more affordable, while natural diamonds carry the tradition of rarity.
- Design Possibilities: The options are nearly endless. You can choose from different shapes (round, oval, pear, cushion and more) and metals (white, yellow or rose gold, platinum or two‑tone). Settings range from prong and bezel to halo and three‑stone designs, and you can add engraving, side stones, filigree or hidden details and claw shape to make the ring truly yours.
5. Why Go Custom?
A custom engagement ring isn’t just unique, it holds deep meaning and offers superior quality oftentimes with a more solid structure and an extra measure of quality control, memorable experiences and exceptional craftsmanship. You approve every element, ensuring the ring reflects your style, relationship and values.
